On April 15, a lone militant attacked a position of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the town of al-Sirmaniyah in the northwestern countryside of Hama.

Al-Sirmaniyah is one of the main frontlines with the northwestern region of Greater Idlib, where several terrorist groups are present and active.

The militant was shot and killed by SAA troops after a brief confrontation. Opposition activists claimed that the militant killed or wounded a number of Syrian service members during his daring attack. However, pro-government sources reported no losses whatsoever.

The militant, who was identified as “Abu Hafs al-Shami,” was a reportedly a member of al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Islam.

Ansar al-Islam, originally based in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, entered Syria in 2014. Today, the terrorist group is a close ally of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib.

Al-Sirmaniyah attack represents a violation of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago.

In the last few days, HTS and its allies violated the ceasefire several times. The militants shelled several government-held villages and towns around Greater Idlib.

The SAA and its allies, first and foremost the Russian Aerospace Forces, will likely respond to the recent violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib very soon. However, the upcoming response will likely be limited to airstrikes or artillery strikes.
