Arthurian legends take a big shift as more details have been revealed about comic creator Liam Sharp's upcoming comic series starring Merlin. Starhenge is an epic series that will be published by Image Comics. After many decades of wanting to tell this story, it will finally begin - reaching readers this summer.
Starhenge is a passion project from Liam Sharp, who has worked on numerous comics including Incredible Hulk, The Green Lantern, Man-Thing, Wonder Woman: Rebirth, Superman Where is Thy Sting?, Gears of War, Judge Dredd, and recently, Batman: Reptilian. Now, he will give fans a new epic that blends science fiction and modern fantasy with classic legendary figures.
In a new press release, Image Comics has shared a preview and lots of new details about Liam Sharp's upcoming fantasy/sci-fi epic, Starhenge. The series will span six issues, beginning in July. The story is said to be a blend of The Terminator and The Green Knight, which the synopsis clearly reflects. This will be Sharp's first Image Comics series and it will likely be a masterful blend of stunning art and complex story. Check out the preview here:
In Starhenge, a future Merlin travels to 5th-century Britain to prevent monstrous time-traveling killer robots from robbing the universe of magic, and Amber Weaver's lively present-day narrative reveals how she becomes drawn into a war across time.
The preview from Image Comics does not yet provide a glimpse of Merlin, but the synopsis definitely conveys the character's importance to the story. Being a powerful wizard, and one of the most famous magic users in legend, Merlin's role in a genre-blending story like this should be rather fascinating. He will be time-traveling to save magic in a story that also has space travel and cyborg-like modifications. The scope of the story spans time and space, mixing past, present, and future narratives into one massive epic.
Regarding the series, creator Liam Sharp says:
I've wanted to do my own Image comic for 30 years. I've wanted to do a Merlin comic for even longer than that! This is a culmination of so many dreams and ambitions of mine finally being realized, and that makes it the most exciting and personal comic project I have ever done. I can't wait to see it on the shelves!
This new series from Liam Sharp will also have eight covers on its first issue. Two are illustrated by the creator, with the remaining six coming from various artists. These include Chris Weston, Ben Templesmith, Christian Ward, Ryan Brown, Matylda McCormack-Sharp, and Mike Perkins. These covers vary greatly in style and focus on different characters, including Merlin and Amber Weaver, whose role within the story has not yet been fully revealed. Fans can find out how all these characters find their lives intertwined across time and space when Starhenge, Book One: The Dragon and the Boar #1 releases from Image Comics on July 6.
