I grew up during the times he was at the peak of his popularity.
There was always something of a "dirty old man" vibe about him.
The reason that all the accusations came out after he died was that he had been protected while he was alive.
Complaints and accusations had been made when they happened but they were ignored or rejected because of who he was and because of the backgrounds of the girls who complained.
I always remember on here how people were sympathetic when he died and then Twiggster came on and said he was glad he'd died and what a piece of siht he was, based on personal experience.
Twiggster took a lot of stick on here for that until a few days later when all the bad stuff came out about him.
