Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn takes to social media to explain why he is not currently interested in taking on a Star Wars movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reveals why he's not interested in making a Star Wars movie right now. The director rose to prominence in the horror community and is currently one of the defining voices in blockbuster cinema. His latest film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is set to close out the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy when it debuts next year.
The early years of Gunn’s career were largely defined by his contributions to the horror genre. This largely came about due to his work on Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake and his own direction of the cult classic splatter film, Slither. He leveled up to blockbuster superhero filmmaking in 2014 when Guardians of the Galaxy debuted, quickly carving out a corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe defined by his own particular writing style and knack for needle drops. Gunn has since directed two films for the MCU (with another on the way next year), but he has also contributed to the DCEU by directing The Suicide Squad and showrunning Peacemaker for HBO Max.
Given his notable position in the franchise world, many fans have called for Gunn to bring his talents to the Star Wars universe. In fact, while discussing The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Twitter, a fan specifically begged Gunn to take on a Star Wars trilogy of his own. However, Gunn responded to the fan and confirmed that he currently does not want to do a Star Wars movie because the Guardians franchise has been enough “space opera” for him. Gunn wrote:
Gunn has made no secret of the fact that he’s a major Star Wars fan. In fact, he has told his fans that the Knights of the Old Republic sub-franchise (arguably a deep cut compared to other avenues of Star Wars) is his favorite element of Star Wars lore. However, as his current work under the Disney banner shares so much DNA with the galaxy far, far away, he does not currently feel the pull to make a Star Wars movie of his own.
It's not difficult to see why fans would want Gunn to work in the Star Wars universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise arguably owes much of its DNA to Star Wars, and even Gunn’s creation of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (which is headed to Disney+) seems indebted to the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. That said, Gunn currently seems eager to move away from that particular arena of storytelling and move to more earthbound stories – as evidenced by some of his recent DC output. However, only time will tell if Gunn ever feels the urge to move back to the space opera arena and take on a Star Wars property of his very own.
