Spurs-linked defender answers questions on his future and Premier League rumours
Rumoured Tottenham target Matthias Ginter has refused to reveal whether he will be leaving Borussia Monchengladbach when his contract runs out in the summer but has insisted that an announcement will be forthcoming before ‘too long’.
Ginter has been a consistent performer for Gladbach and an indispensable part of their backline since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017.
The versatile defender was alleged to be on Tottenham’s radar during last summer’s transfer window (Bild 17/05/21 via Sport Witness) but he ended up staying put at Borussia Park.
Some sources had alleged that Spurs were monitoring the 27-year-old’s contract situation ahead of the January transfer window (CalcioMercato).
The German international’s contract runs out this summer and journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed last week that Aston Villa had reached out to his representatives over a potential move to Villa Park.
Ginter has now insisted that he has no idea what the future holds for him ahead of the summer.
When asked if he has any closer in talks with Gladbach over a new contract, the defender told Sport1: “At the moment I talk a lot with my family and with other people I trust.
“It’s difficult to come up with a timeline, but I don’t think it will be too long before there’s anything to announce.
“But whether it will ultimately be in one, two or three weeks – I have no idea. I don’t think it will take much longer. If something is fixed, it will also be reported. But until then you have to be patient.”
When asked about the factors that will dictate his choice of club, Ginter said: “Of course, it’s also about the family environment, which was always great here in Gladbach.
“In addition, for me, it is also about the club itself, about the fact that it has potential and is ambitious and that the sporting role planned for me fits.
“In addition, it is always important for a player that the coach likes you. There are a few sporty things, a few aside from that and ultimately you weigh things up. There will never be 100% security beforehand anyway, but you try to decide as well as possible.”
Ginter was then asked about the speculation linking him with a move to Villa, to which he responded: “I would like to hold back on specific clubs or domestic and foreign issues for the time being.
“But of course, you talk to different people and you have a few things that are important to you. Then you will see everything else.”

Ginter is solid and versatile, and I believe that he can fit in well in a back three. However, the 28-year-old should not be looked at as anything more than a squad option for Spurs if we are to have ambitions of closing the gap with the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
