Mike Gregory dead at 65: Tributes paid to ‘quiet man of darts’ who nearly beat Phil Taylor in World Championship final

FORMER World Darts Championship finalist Mike Gregory has passed away aged 65.

Gregory reached the final in 1992 where he lost to Phil Taylor after missing six match darts to win the world title – eventually losing out in a sudden death leg.

He became a founding member of the PDC in his career before switching back to the BDO.

Gregory reached the final of the World Masters twice in 1983 and 1992 and won the MFI World Matchplay and the News of the World twice.

He won the 1992 and 1993 PDC UK Masters events – the first held by the organisation.

Tributes have poured in for the former darts ace, with Taylor saying: “Sorry to hear that Mike Gregory has passed away. Thoughts go out to all his family at this sad time.”

Bobby George also paid tribute saying: “So sad to hear of Mike Gregory’s passing. Sincere condolences go out to his family and friends. RIP Mike .”

Another former player, Steve Beaton, tweeted: “Just heard the sad news that Mike Gregory has passed away.

“Really nice friend and Darts colleague who I had the pleasure of doing many an exhibition with. My thoughts go out to all his family and friends such a sad day. RIP my friend.”

Current world No 5 James Wade commented: “Sad to hear the news that Mike Gregory has passed away. Thoughts are with his family RIP.”

Professional darts referee George Noble tweeted: “Unfortunately (it) is true he passed away this morning.

“I just spoke to one of his friends… a real shame Mike had a great sense of humour.”

The PDC released a statement saying: “The Professional Darts Corporation expresses its condolences to the family and friends of former player Mike Gregory.”
