Johnny Depp Says He Never Watched The First Pirates of the Caribbean Movie

0

Johnny Depp reveals that he's never actually watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Released in 2003, the first Pirates of the Caribbean was a hit with fans and kick-started a multi-billionaire dollar franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl introduced audiences to Depp's mischievous pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, a beloved character that would go on to appear in all four of the movie's sequels, the most recent of which, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017.

Talk of a sixth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been ongoing since before the fifth, but no update has been shared on the project for quite some time. The development of a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film has also potentially been complicated by Depp's recent legal troubles. The 58-year-old actor's tumultuous marriage with ex-wife Amber Heard has long been the subject of headlines, and the vicious back-and-forth between the two actors has now moved to the courtroom, with Depp suing Heard for defamation to the tune of $50 million.

As shared in a new tweet from Matthew Belloni, founder of Puck News, Depp's testimony in court against Heard included a surprising admission: he's never seen Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Belloni calls the admission "a baller move" and highlights that Depp was nominated for Best Actor Oscar for his role as Sparrow at the 2004 Academy Awards. Check out Belloni's tweet below:

Depp's admission comes after Jared Leto's recent claims that he hasn't seen one of his own movies in over 22 years. Depp, of course, has previously gone on record about his dislike of watching his movies and joins the likes of Meryl Streep, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem, and Reese Witherspoon, all actors who make a habit of avoiding their films. While it may seem curious that the actor didn't watch a movie for which he was nominated for an Oscar, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl would seem to be but one in a long line of Depp's movies that he has not seen.

It remains to be seen how Depp's current legal troubles will impact the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Still, it's increasingly unlikely that audiences will see Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow. With a spinoff supposedly in development with Margot Robbie attached to star, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may have to learn to survive without Depp's involvement. It might be a good thing for the franchise to get a fresh start, as many fans consider the later installments to be noticeably worse than Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the other two original trilogy films.
