Wolverine and Spider-Man Visit Fortnite's Durrr Burger in New Cover Art
Two longtime staples of Marvel Comics, Wolverine and Spider-Man, find themselves standing atop Fortnite's infamous Durrr Burger in new cover art for the first issue of the limited series, Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War. Wolverine and Spider-Man have teamed up countless times with each other in the past, not just in each other's comic book series' or in company event crossovers, but in miniseries dedicated entirely to them teaming up. The most notable example was Spider-Man vs. Wolverine by Jim Owlsley and Mark Bright, or more recently within the last 15 years, Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine by Jason Aaron and Adam Kubert.
However, this latest effort seeks to put a new twist on the classic pairing by inserting Fortnite into the mix. The series is a follow-up to 2020's Fortnite X Marvel - Nexus War: Thor. This new series places Marvel's heroes on the island map of the video game world, locked into a never-ending war that requires the Zero Shard for things to finally culminate in a turning point. The Zero Shard is a crystallized fragment of the Zero Point - a powerful orb used to maintain the island.
Spider-Man and Wolverine won't be the only heroes stranded on Fortnite's signature Athena island. They'll be accompanied by the likes of Iron Man, Shuri, and classic Fortnite characters, per a press release on the official Marvel website. Marvel has also revealed a new variant cover drawn up by Donald Mustard. The cover—which can be seen below in full—features the two Marvel heroes standing atop the sign for Durrr Burger, an iconic fast food franchise from Fortnite. Written by Christos Gage with artwork from Sergio Dávila, Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War #1 reaches stores June 8th, 2021.
What makes this particular team-up between Spider-Man and Wolverine so titillating is that, unlike previous crossovers between them, the odd couple are not itching to fight each other or take on some kind of giant threat that puts the galaxy in jeopardy. In this case, the two are teaming up in order to search for the Zero Shard. The reason why this is so interesting is because seeking out a treasure places both men out of their usual element.
Most of Wolverine's adventures see him slicing and dicing whatever's in his way, while Spider-Man typically quips and thwips his way to save the day. In this upcoming adventure, neither of those strengths will do them much of any good. Maybe Wolverine's slicing and dicing method will prove useful if he runs into any Fortnite characters in the way of his goa. But as for the goal itself, both men will need to actually work as a cohesive unit to investigate the island and find the Zero Shard in ample time. Readers interested to see how Wolverine and Spider-Man handle this unique journey can pick up Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War #1 by Christos Gage and Sergio Dávila starting June 8 at local comic book shops and digital comic stores.
