X-Men's Original Mystique Actress Reveals If She'd Star In MCU
Rebecca Romijn, the actor who originally portrayed the shapeshifting villain Mystique in the Bryan Singer-directed X-Men, shares whether she would star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Romijn appeared in both direct sequels of the Fox franchise, X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. She also had a brief cameo appearance in the prequel film X-Men: First Class, which featured a younger version of Mystique played by Jennifer Lawrence. Although Mystique lost her powers in X-Men: The Last Stand thanks to an anti-mutant genome drug dubbed "the cure," a later scene hints at her ability to return in some capacity.
With the highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on the verge of hitting theaters, there has been a high level of speculation regarding cameos due to its parallel universe plot elements. Multiple rumors and theories have made the rounds on social media, especially following the reveal of Patrick Stewart's return as Professor X. This has sparked discussions of whether or not mutants will finally make their official appearance within the MCU.
Romijn recently sat down with ComicBook and discussed whether she would return to her role as the classic X-Men villain Mystique. When asked if she would get back into the iconic blue makeup, Romijn responded that she would be open to the invitation if the chance were ever offered to her. Read what the X-Men star said below.
I don't know if they would ever want me back. I mean, that was quite a few years back when I played that character, but I would love to, yeah, absolutely. It was a fantastic franchise to be a part of. I'll love that cast until the day I die. We had a great time together. And yeah, I would absolutely be open to that.
In 2019, The Walt Disney Company purchased 21st Century Fox, picking up its assets in a multi-billion dollar deal. This includes the rights to Fox's X-Men films as well as the versions of the characters within those films, such as Wolverine, Professor X, and Mystique. Currently, there are no plans to produce another main X-Men movie. However, a third Deadpool film is in the works.
While it seems unlikely Romijn's version of Mystique will join the MCU in the immediate future, recent Marvel films and TV shows open up the possibility of a potential return at some point. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange accidentally opens a rift in the multiverse allowing past Sony Marvel characters to appear in the MCU. The Disney+ series WandaVision even included Evan Peters as a different version of his Fox mutant character Quicksilver, replacing Aaron Taylor-Johnson's MCU hero in a false reality bait-and-switch that both delighted and enraged fans. At any rate, it's nice to hear Romijn would be willing to reprise her X-Men role if the opportunity were to arise.
