Thor's Real Story & Olympus Mission Hinted At In Love & Thunder Trailer
The first Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer teases the Son of Odin's new role and a mission to Olympus, one where he may even become a diplomat representing New Asgard. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor is on a quest of self-discovery as he travels the stars with the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the new trailer teases a return to New Asgard and a quest to meet with Zeus and the Greek Gods. Considering Thor's newfound pacifism, he may be sent to negotiate and ease potential tensions with this new pantheon.
As seen in the new Love and Thunder trailer Thor no longer cares for battle, looking instead to foster peace and planting his mighty ax Stormbreaker in the ground. Despite seemingly retiring from his days as a warrior hero, the rest of the trailer sees Thor in brand new Asgardian armor with Stormbreaker in hand, venturing out with his friend and ally Korg. Meanwhile, it seems as though New Asgard on Earth has greatly expanded with King Valkyrie as its ruler. Thor and Korg are also seen on Olympus, home of the Greek gods and their ruler Zeus (a fellow god of lightning and thunder).
While the film's villain Gorr the God Butcher wasn't in the Love and Thunder trailer, it seems as though Thor's new mission before facing the deadly foe will likely be for Valkyrie, departing on a boat from New Asgard and heading for Olympus. A Thor Easter egg from Spider-Man: No Way Home did potentially tease that New Asgard is having political turmoil with Zeus. If that's indeed the case, Thor's new armor and boat could be from King Valkyrie herself, having agreed to act as a diplomat/representative for New Asgard to bring about a peaceful solution to whatever problem Zeus may have with them in the new film.
Thor becoming a representative of New Asgard would give him a role not unlike Natalie Portman's Senator Padmé Amidala in Star Wars where she represented Naboo after her time as the planet's ruler in the prequel trilogy. Ironically, Jane Foster's role in Love and Thunder will see Portman's character becoming the Mighty Thor wielding a reforged Mjolnir, taking on Thor's traditional role in the MCU. Based on what's been revealed thus far from the Love and Thunder trailer, it does seem like it would be a fitting role for the Son of Odin given his new pacifist mentality.
While largely conjecture, Thor becoming a representative of New Asgard and initiating peace talks with Zeus and Olympus does sound like an interesting plot, one that would likely blow up into chaos as soon as Gorr arrives and starts killing gods. At any rate, Thor's new direction clearly has a lot of exciting avenues for his journey of self-discovery. Thankfully, Marvel fans won't have to wait too long to find out with Thor: Love and Thunder set to release on July 8th.
