Young Sheldon: 8 Things Fans Didn't See Coming | Screen Rant
Young Sheldon is, for the most part, a predictable sitcom. That's mainly because the main character Sheldon Cooper re-told many of the stories that are playing out while in his adult life on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory. But there have been some surprises.
Along with a child's perspective sometimes being skewed or biased, which could have impacted the way Sheldon saw perceived situations versus how they really happened, he didn't tell his adult friends everything about his time growing up. In fact, he didn't even mention having friends like Tam or Paige. There are plenty of surprising things that happened on the show thus far that involved Sheldon's family members as well.
Fans knew from the adult Georgie's appearance on The Big Bang Theory, along with Sheldon's telling of his older brother's life, that Georgie had been married and divorced multiple times and that he was a self-made man. After dropping out of high school, he launched his own chain of stores that became widely successful.
But one detail that fans didn't learn was that at 17, Georgie was dating an older woman, lying about his age to her. After Mandy – one of the best characters introduced late in Young Sheldon - discovered his real age, she promptly broke up with him. But soon after, she discovered that she was pregnant. As the story plays out, it seems as though Georgie became a teenage father, a total shock to fans.
Paige was on a perfect path, just like Sheldon. She had loving parents, an incredible intellect, and a drive to succeed. But trouble at home, including her parents' divorce, led to Paige's life changing dramatically. It was one of the times Young Sheldon dealt with serious issues.
When Sheldon saw her after some time, he was shocked to discover that she was going through a rebellious stage, changing her hair, wearing make-up, and boasting a don't care attitude. She stopped applying herself. The next time Sheldon saw Paige, she had gone to university to study and get back on the right track, but it was clear she was still struggling. This was a complete surprise as fans believed Paige would have adjusted as well, if not more, than Sheldon.
Fans knew that George eventually cheated on Mary, if adult Sheldon's recollections about things he saw and believed were correct. But no one expected that the first inkling of a romantic interest in someone else would be with the nasty neighbor Brenda.
Initially an angry and mean woman, Brenda mellowed in her divorce, and it turned out she was wonderful company. She loved sharing a beer with George in a bar and had a similar sense of humor to him. Watching their flirtations and feelings develop between then was both difficult and surprising.
Dale, like all the rest of Connie's beaus within Meemaw's relationship timelines, was head over heels for her. So, it came as a complete surprise when, in an instant, he decided to end things. The deciding factor was Connie's drive to continue running her laundromat and living life on full speed. Dale wanted to retire, move away to Florida, and spend the rest of his years relaxing on a beach with the woman he loved.
It became crystal clear to him in one quick moment that it wasn't going to work long term with because of their widely different visions for the future, and he broke up with her abruptly. Connie was just as surprised as viewers were when he declared the words "we're done."
Pastor Jeff was married to a beautiful young woman who was clearly only with him for a Green Card. While he meant well and was sweet, he wasn't exactly her type so it wasn't surprising when she left him.
Then, fans were completely surprised when, after going through a short period of mourning of his failed relationship, Pastor Jeff met a beautiful police officer who fell head over heels in love with him. They got married quickly and even had a baby, which was not a character trajectory fans saw coming.
Dr. Sturgis was quirky and eccentric, but no one expected that he was suffering from severe mental health issues that had even put him in a state of psychosis more than once. His disappearance and erratic behavior was puzzling to everyone until this was revealed.
While the family rallied behind him, including Connie, John felt it was best for him to distance himself from them, though he remained friends with everyone. It was a tough time for Sheldon who had grown close to the professor, which makes it all the more interesting that he never talked about Dr. Sturgis in adulthood.
Even Paige was shocked that Sheldon was doing so well in university given his socially awkward nature and inability to make friends. In high school, aside from Tam, he wasn't able to get along with anyone near his age. But he became friendly with a number of other young men in dorms on the same floor as him who shared his love for games like Dungeons & Dragons.
It's interesting that, in adulthood, Sheldon always talked about how he didn't have any friends. It's possible he never viewed these schoolmates as friends, per se, but merely people he could spend some time with to do something he liked. Nonetheless, seeing Sheldon as somewhat popular within a group of kids was surprising.
Mary is as straightlaced and religious as they come. She believes in the sanctity of marriage, being a good person, and following the word of the Lord. So, it came as a shock when she started to demonstrate a little crush on Pastor Rob once he joined the congregation to teach the children.
She did her best to repress the feelings, which manifested in her having some racy dreams about being in bed with him wearing lingerie. It's human nature that she might feel this way, especially considering that her marriage with George was strained. Had she not been married, Mary dating Pastor Rob is a couple that would have made a lot of sense on Young Sheldon. Nonetheless, it still surprised viewers to see Mary in another light.
