Outer Range: Why Did The Mountain Disappear? | Screen Rant
WARNING: This contains spoilers for Outer Range episodes 3 and 4.
In Outer Range episode 3, a mountain disappears from the town for a few seconds, and the explanation may have to do with the mysterious void. Amazon's newest show Outer Range sees Josh Brolin as a troubled man trying to protect his family amid a supernatural mystery. An eight-episode series, Outer Range has two episodes released each week and it's proving to be the type of show where every scene is a clue to something bigger. Outer Range mixes elements of suspense, horror, and sci-fi in a plot whose questions far exceed the answers.
Aside from Josh Brolin’s character Royal, the most important character in Outer Rage is Autumn, the mysterious poet who seems to know a lot more about the void than she says. Just a wanderer asking to stay at the Abbotts' ranch at first, Autumn proved to be involved in some way in the void's story by throwing Josh Brolin's character down the hole to see what would happen. Even so, Royal has continued to keep the void a secret from his family and has Autumn as the only one he can discuss the mystery with.
Things got even weirder when Royal saw an entire mountain disappear from the landscape for a few moments after his hand touched Autumn's. The scene initially appeared to be a simple hallucination, but the fact that the Deputy Sherrif in another part of the town saw the same thing proves that the mountain did indeed disappear. Other citizens have also reported it, but those who didn’t see it happen can't take them seriously. The fact that the mountain disappeared as soon as Royal's hand touched Autumn's and then reappeared as their hands separated indicates that the poet is the reason for the Twin Peaks-like phenomenon. As the show is dealing with time travel, the most likely cause of Outer Range's disappearing mountain is that Autumn comes from another time period, whether in the past or future, and her interaction with Royal created a temporal anomaly that resulted in the mountain seeming to disappear in a representation of Autumn's own time.
Many elements indicate that Autumn could be a time traveler. Before Royal discovered the Void, Autumn already had drawings of it, she knew its location, and she hinted at knowing what happened to Perry's missing wife. Autumn also says she doesn’t have any memories from before a certain age, so it could be that she fell into the void as a kid, lost her memories in the process, and ended up growing up in a different timeline. If Autumn is causing temporal anomalies that fit with her own time, this would also help to explain other horror movie-like scenes that occur near Autumn and Royal, most notably the appearance of the ethereal buffalo.
The disappearance of the mountain is yet another addition to the already long list of mysteries that Outer Range will have to solve. The blending of sci-fi movie elements with horror elements is resulting in a story where anything can happen. It remains to be seen if the next episodes of Outer Range will pay off everything that is being set up.
Prime Video releases new episodes of Outer Range every Friday.
