Natasha Lyonne Has Ideas For Russian Doll Season 3 | Screen Rant
Natasha Lyonne reveals that she has ideas for Russian Doll season 3. First released in 2019, Russian Doll was a hit with both audiences and critics. The mind-bending comedy/ drama show stars Lyonne as a New Yorker who finds herself stuck in a time loop, constantly reliving the same birthday party over and over. Russian Doll's first season earned the show two Emmy wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Russian Doll season 2 landed on Netflix earlier this week, earning similarly rave reviews from critics and once more catching up with Lyonne's Nadia. This time around, instead of a time loop, Nadia finds herself transported back in time to 1982 and trapped inside the body of her mother, who happens to be pregnant with Nadia. While the show has earned positive reviews, there's no word yet on whether Russian Doll season 3 will happen. In addition to Lyonne, the show stars Alan Zaveri, Greta Lee, Elizabeth Ashley, Annie Murphy, Carolyn Michelle Smith, and Sharlto Copley.
In a new interview with Variety, Lyonne reveals that despite the show not having been renewed yet, she has ideas for Russian Doll season three. The star says there's an "idea cooking for season three" and that she can see herself never fully being done with the show, even floating the idea of coming back for a movie in 20 years. Ultimately, however, whether she gets to do more of the show will depend on "appetite and reception." Check out Lyonne's full comment below:
"First of all, I’m so excited that you’ve been greenlighting the third season this entire interview. I’m really grateful and we’ll tell Netflix and we’re all so excited to hear the news from you: It feels like there’s an idea cooking for Season 3. And it would be really fun if it was one of those shows where, five years later, it’s like, 'No, wait a second! I think we’ve got another idea for a few episodes.' I would love to see that for Russian Doll. 'Oh, wait, I think we’ve got an idea of our original movie now. It’s been 20 years later.' I don’t think I’ll ever be done with this show. It depends a lot about appetite and reception."
It remains to be seen whether Lyonne will get to further explore her ideas in Russian Doll season three, especially given Netflix's reputation for canceling beloved series after only one or two seasons. With the recent report regarding Netflix's loss of subscribers (and increased projected losses for the future), it's unclear how the streamer's content strategy will evolve and whether Russian Doll will fit into this new plan. While subscribers are sure to see some changes in the next few years regarding Netflix's original content, it seems like Russian Doll season two has been a big hit so far.
Lyonne doesn't reveal what plans she has for Russian Doll season 3 but, given the nature of the first two seasons, it's likely that the story would involve deep character exploration through some sort of time-related anomaly. While both Russian Doll seasons 1 and 2 deal with time travel and time loops, the show always uses these devices to dig into Nadia as a character and flesh out new aspects of her life. Russian Doll season 3 is completely up in the air at this point but, even if it doesn't end up happening at Netflix, Lyonne may be able to take the show elsewhere, meaning audiences may not have seen the last of Nadia after finishing Russian Doll season 2.
