Mickey Mouse Becomes Playable In New Kingdom Hearts 3 Mod
A new Kingdom Hearts 3 mod makes King Mickey fully playable, complete with the most devastating spells from his playable appearances in KH 2.
A new Kingdom Hearts 3 mod makes King Mickey fully playable. Being a crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy, the Kingdom Hearts series features guest appearances from several of the House of Mouse’s most iconic characters - with Donald Duck and Goofy being chief among them as main protagonist Sora’s companions. Naturally, Mickey Mouse himself is one of the many classic Disney characters appearing in Kingdom Hearts, serving as the wise king of Disney Castle and a powerful recurring ally throughout the series.
In fact, players can temporarily take control of King Mickey in Kingdom Hearts 2, with the mighty mouse arriving to help Sora should he be defeated in certain boss battles. Though his range of attacks is fairly limited in comparison to Sora, many fans enjoyed being able to unleash Mickey's considerable power as he gives Sora a chance to regain his bearings. Additionally, Mickey is playable in the Nintendo 3DS spin-off Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days in the game’s bonus Mission Mode, and Ventus and Aqua can use his D-Link abilities in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. However, most of the time Mickey is non-playable, though he does lend his Keyblade to a small handful of battles in both Kingdom Hearts III and its connected ReMind DLC.
Still, some Kingdom Hearts fans wish they could play as King Mickey more often, and a new mod by RedReaper777 allows them to do exactly that. Posted on Nexus Mods (via The Gamer), this Kingdom Hearts 3 mod replaces 2.9 Riku's data with King Mickey’s pre-existing character model and moveset - with RedReaper777 even swapping out Mickey’s Thundaga attack with the Holy spell he uses during his brief playable stints in Kingdom Hearts 2. However, since the mod uses the data from the Riku that players fight as a boss in Kingdom Hearts 3, King Mickey’s attacks and movement options are very limited - though the mod does feature his special Double Duel attack and “cursed” skin from Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage. A Youtuber by the handle of TheGamersJoint would post a video showing RedReaper777's King Mickey mod in action.
Since its PC release last year, Kingdom Hearts 3 has seen plenty of mods, with the game’s use of Unreal Engine 4 making it especially easy to modify. Fans have given Sora his very own Pikachu to assist him on his adventures, turned Kingdom Hearts 3’s secret boss Yozora into a playable character in his own right, and even celebrated a Star Wars-related tease in the recent Kingdom Hearts 4 reveal trailer by replacing Sora’s Keyblade with the toy lightsabers found in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
Even before his starring role in the Kingdom Hearts series, Mickey Mouse has ranked as one of the most recognizable characters in all of fiction - which only added to the novelty of seeing Disney’s mascot performing ninja-like sword moves and powerful magic spells in a Square Enix JRPG. While RedReaper777’s mod doesn’t grant King Mickey the full range of impressive parkour moves that Sora and his friends utilize in Kingdom Hearts 3, longtime fans might enjoy getting to wield the king’s legendary Keyblade against Organization XIII and their minions full time.
