But making the bed means changing your pillowcases, and confronting the ugly yellow stains that plague even the most diligent homemakers.

The domestic geniuses at Lifehacker know where the nasty stains stem from, the best ways to get rid of them, and how to keep them at bay.

Unfortunately, if yellowed pillowcases give you the creepy crawlies, you won’t be comforted by the gross source of the discoloration.

“The more someone sweats, the more that moisture seeps through the pillowcase and onto your pillow, causing the stains,” the pros at Lifehacker explained.

If you’re prone to sweating in your sleep, that perspiration probably causes the gross stains on your pillows.

But yellow spots could be the result of any moisture: oil from your scalp, water from going to bed with damp hair, makeup or skincare products, or even drool could be the culprit.

Once you notice the discoloration, you should try and remove it right away. You’re more likely to successfully lift the stains if you tackle them straight away.

According to Lifehacker, you should wash your pillows making sure to follow the care instructions on the tag.

If your pillows have deep-set stains, you can add two household products to your laundry to lift them.

Add a half-cup of bleach and a half-cup of borax to your load of pillows, alongside your detergent.

Then, follow your usual method of washing and drying.

If there are spots or stains, you can spot-treat them, using your favorite stain remover or a paste of baking soda and water.

Wash your pillows at least twice a year for the cleanest and healthiest bedroom, and once you get them clean, protect against future stains with an extra layer of security.

“Putting a waterproof pillow protector on before your pillowcase can help prevent a lot of the discoloration,” the pros recommended.
