Elon Musk should remember that no one stays in charge of Twitter for long
Elon Musk is about to become Twitter’s new owner. Musk—who owns and runs five other companies—has proposed a raft of changes at Twitter, including making the website’s ranking algorithm open-source, relaxing content moderation practices, and introducing an edit button for tweets. Although he hasn’t said whether he will personally take on the title of CEO, Musk has said he doesn’t have confidence in Twitter’s management, which could spell trouble for the company’s board of directors and current CEO Parag Agrawal.
No matter who Musk decides should helm the newly-private company, he’d do well to remember that bosses at Twitter tend not to last very long. The star-crossed social network may be one of the hardest tech companies to run, as evidenced by the high turnover among its chief executives. Aside from TikTok, which churned through three CEOs in 2020, no other big tech company burns through bosses faster than Twitter.
