The WandaVision Fan Theory Elizabeth Olsen Wanted To Make MCU Canon
Elizabeth Olsen has a WandaVision fan theory she wanted to see become canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it pertained to Evan Peters' cameo. The MCU Disney+ show was responsible for kicking off Phase 4 in 2021 after a record-setting gap between MCU content. Due to the increased excitement to jump back into the Marvel world, WandaVision became the subject of great speculation as viewers tuned in weekly to learn why Scarlet Witch and Vision (Paul Bettany) were living their lives within the setting of TV sitcoms. It also helped that the show was confirmed to set up the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which Olsen's Wanda Maximoff was confirmed to star.
Once WandaVision debuted on Disney+, the theories about what was going on in Westview, who was responsible, and more, created a barrage of theories. Audiences obsessed over the possibility of Mephisto being WandaVision's villain, while speculation also rose about possible multiverse connections. There was also wild rumors about Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic making an appearance, and what the hexes meant. However, rumors about Peters appearing as Pietro Maximoff after playing Quicksilver in Fox's X-Men franchise brought an entirely different level of conjecture. Despite his appearance in the show, it was revealed Peters wasn't Quicksilver at all, as he was instead Westview resident Ralph Bohner.
Now that Olsen is doing press for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the actor is being asked about the MCU sequel movie and WandaVision's role in setting up her story. During an interview with Independent, Olsen revealed which WandaVision fan theory she hoped would be MCU canon. She said that she would have loved to see Marvel explain Evan Peters' Pietro appearance by using the multiverse.
"There was one where they thought we were bringing in the Multiverse with the Pietro character, with Evan [Peters]. The sad thing is, when we were doing WandaVision before Covid, that was not part of the docket yet, and then it kind of overlapped when we finished the show. So we could have actually gone back and fixed or adjusted that. I thought that could have been cool to make Pietro a part of the Multiverse."
Instead of revealing that Peters' Quicksilver was from Fox's X-Men universe and entered WandaVision's story through the multiverse, Marvel went in the controversial direction of making him Ralph Bohner. This decision split viewers, as many hoped for a better explanation for Peters' appearance as Quicksilver in the MCU. However, it appears that the multiverse was not yet as big a part of the MCU's plan at that point. Olsen's comments suggest the multiverse was not really in consideration when WandaVision began, even though it is now one of the cornerstones of the MCU's Phase 4 story.
Marvel might not have made this WandaVision MCU canon like Olsen and others would have liked, but that doesn't mean the door is completely closed on that changing in the future. These particular theories about Peters' WandaVision character being the same Pietro as Fox's X-Men movies won't come true. However, he could still play a proper version of Quicksilver in the future. The multiverse is opening up even more, and with Patrick Stewart playing a version of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is not out of the realms of possibility that Peters might get to play Quicksilver once more at some point after WandaVision.
