WITH so many rules, it can be tricky to know what to plant and when in your garden.
Just when you think you’ve got it all worked out, it becomes apparent that you’re months late planting your blooms.
Luckily, the pros at Gardeners’ World revealed exactly what you should be putting in your garden in May, and it makes life so much easier.
They say: “In May, all risk of frost has passed in most regions of the UK.
“Many vegetable, herb and flower seeds can be directly sown outdoors.”
When it comes to vegetables, some are easier to grow than others, but planting them at the right time is half the battle.

Beetroot, Carrots and Courgettes
According the the gardening experts, Beetroot is a good place to start if you’re new to growing veg.
“he seeds don’t need much encouragement to germinate and they require little maintenance once established,” they explain.
Carrots are a classic that are equally as hard to mess up, and now it the perfect time to get them going.

The pros say: “As well as the classic orange cultivars, you could also try growing colourful cultivars such as ‘Yellowstone’.
“Sow into shallow drills of well-prepared, stone-free soil, or in pots.”
Although they may need a bit more attention, Courgettes are a great option to plant in May.
“Courgettes can be direct-sown in well-prepared soil outside or in pots or multi-celled trays for transplanting later on, they also work well in containers.
“Courgettes are hungry crops – feed them weekly once they’ve started flowering.”

Sunflowers, Cornflowers and Zinnias
Sunflowers are a great option if you want to brighten up your outdoor space and they can be sown directly outside now.
You can also put them pots or multi-celled trays for planting out later on.
The pros say: “Try growing monster cultivars like ‘American Giant’ or shorter varieties such as ‘Moulin Rouge’ for cut flower arrangements.
“Protect young plants from slugs and snails, you may need to stake particularly tall varieties.”

Zinnia’s can thrive in pots or in beds, just scatter the seeds evenly onto moist soil to see them bloom.
May is also the prime time to plant Cornflowers to make sure you can enjoy the blooms this year.
