Consumer tip: Choose your passwords wisely
Last year, the number of data breaches jumped by 68%. Many of these are due to compromised passwords. Experts say consumers chose convenience over security when creating passwords. Consumers are still using easy-to-guess passwords and the average person uses the same password 14 times, potentially resulting in 14 compromised accounts.
In honor of the recent World Password Day, the Better Business Bureau shared some tips to protect your data and accounts. First, make passwords between eight and 13 characters, missing uppercase and lowercase letters and inserting random numbers and symbols. Don’t use birthdates or easily guessed words like pet names. Use a unique password for each account and don’t just add a number to your old password. Update passwords regularly and close any old accounts associated with financial data. Use two-factor authentication when possible and password manager software and password-protect your devices.
