Man Utd’s season goes from bad to worse as even Legends can’t win a game in 3-1 humbling at home to Liverpool

MANCHESTER UNITED’S season somehow got worse as Mark Gonzalez scored a stunning free-kick to win Liverpool the Legends charity match at Old Trafford.

The former Chilean international only spent one season at Anfield in 2006-07 – scoring two Premier League goals.

But he cemented his status as a Merseyside hero by grabbing the winner – and he then matched his Prem tally to seal it in injury time.

Liverpool won a free-kick 30 yards out on the right just after the hour mark.

Quinton Fortune encroached for the initial effort – giving Gonzalez another chance to try his luck.

And he sure delivered, whipping a wondergoal into the top corner with his wand of a left foot, giving United sub goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington no chance.

The goalless first half was all played in high spirits for good causes including the Man Utd Foundation, with £1.3million raised as Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher captained the two teams and the likes of Patrice Evra, Jaap Stam and Andriy Voronin all featuring.

But Liverpool came flying out of the blocks in the second 45.

Replacement forward Luis Garcia showed he could still do a job for Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple chasers by producing a classy bit of skill.

His cheeky stepover beat Raimond van der Gouw all ends up and Garcia rounded the goalkeeper to roll into an empty net and open the scoring.

However, their lead barely lasted three minutes because Dimitar Berbatov won a penalty and coolly slotted it in for 1-1.

Dirk Kuyt smashed an effort against the post while it was still level before Gonzalez restored the visitors’ lead.

Garcia should have added his second but fired wide late on then at the other end Antonio Valencia teed up Danny Webber but his header from six yards out bounced over.

Neville and Carragher finally came together with the United man running through and going down under a challenge from his old enemy – but there was nothing wrong with it so no penalty was given.

And as the clock ticked into injury time, Gonzalez capped off the win after the excellent Garcia set him up.
