Iyer, an Indian Administrative Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, entered the civil services in 1981 and took voluntary retirement in 2009 to join the water and sanitation initiatives at the World Bank. He succeeds Amitabh Kant, who has been appointed the G20 Sherpa after his term ended on June 30.
