Arsenal to sign Alex Grimaldo from Benfica

Arsenal have reportedly “explored” the possibility of signing Alex Grimaldo from Benfica, according to A Bola, as quoted by The Daily Express.

The Gunners have made a £6.4m offer to sign the 26-year-old defender and are now in negotiations with the Portuguese giants about the proposed transfer.

The north Londoners have now stepped up their interest in landing the full-back this summer as manager Mikel Arteta looks to bring in cover for Kieran Tierney at the Emirates.

Reports in recent days emerged that Arsenal were considering making an offer for the left-back and now it would appear that Mikel Arteta’s side have made their firm interest in the left-back by submitting a bit.

The story goes on to claim that Arsenal are now in negotiations with Benfica as they look to complete a deal ahead of next season.

The Premier League giants were initially keen on bringing Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez but the club have not been able to settle on a price with the Dutch outfit and are also facing stiff competition from the league rivals Manchester United.

That has caused the Gunners to switch their attentions to Grimaldo, whose contract is due to expire next summer.

The Spaniard came through FC Barcelona’s youth setup and contributed six goals in 92 matches for the B Team.

Grimaldo joined Benfica in 2015 and has netted 19 goals in 249 appearances for the Portuguese club.
