San Jose: 83-year-old man arrested after fatal shooting at mobile home park

SAN JOSE — An 83-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a neighbor at a mobile home park along the Guadalupe River on Monday evening, police said.

Officers were called at 6:39 p.m. to the River Glen mobile home park in the 2100 block of Almaden Road for a report of a shooting and found a wounded man near a residence there, according to San Jose police.

The man died at the scene. His name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

An ensuing investigation identified Bert McElhaney, 83, as the shooting suspect, police said.

Police said McElhaney was taken to the Santa Clara County Main Jail on Tuesday morning. Additional details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately released by police.

The shooting marks the city’s 20th homicide of the year. San Jose had investigated 23 homicides at the same point in 2021.
