San Jose: Deputies detain armed woman after standoff in Rose Garden neighborhood
SAN JOSE — Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies have detained an armed woman in San Jose’s Rose Garden neighborhood after trying to get her to surrender, a standoff that ended after they ordered a police dog to subdue her.
She appeared to be despondent as a crisis negotiator spent over an hour talking to the woman and trying to coax her into dropping a gun she was holding, according to authorities and witnesses.
The sheriff’s office said in a tweet that they are responding to a person “in possession of a firearm and that they were “using de-escalation methods to provide a peaceful resolution.”
The stalemate unfolded sometime after 10 a.m., when deputies were called to a home near North Bascom and Bel Air avenues. Several sheriff vehicles blocked the street crossing, and a crisis negotiation team and deputies could be seen and heard pleading with the woman.
They could be heard referring to the woman as a doctor, and at one point a person dressed in medical scrubs was seen talking to deputies at the scene.
At about 11:30 a.m., the deputies sent a police dog at the woman and she was detained soon after, and could be seen being brought into an ambulance.
No shots were fired. Additional details, including the circumstances leading to the confrontation, were not immediately released by authorities.
