Trafalgar Square fire: 125 firefighters and ten engines tackle huge blaze with smoke seen billowing from pub basement
MORE than 100 firefighters battled a blaze at a pub in Trafalgar Square on Tuesday night.
The London Fire Brigade first had 70 firefighters at The Admiralty pub – but that later increased to 125.
More than 50 per cent of the cellar was said to be on fire as thick smoke billowed from the watering hole.
Station Commander Keith McDermott said: “Due to the arduous, challenging and hot conditions inside the basement we’ve increased the number of fire engines and firefighters at the scene.
“Around 150 people evacuated the pub and surrounding businesses before the brigade arrived. There has been no reports of any injuries.”
No one is thought to have been injured in the fire.
The LFB was called at 17:49 to reports of smoke and flames in a boozer in Spring Gardens.
Police closed off the surrounding streets and Londoners were told to avoid the area.
Emergency services don’t know what started the fire.
A London Fire brigade spokesperson said: “10 fire engines and 70 firefighters have been dispatched to a pub in Trafalgar Square.
“More than half of the basement is alight.

“We were called to an incident at 17:49 and the fire is still ongoing.
“The cause will be determined after the fire is out.”
Heavy traffic was predicted due to road closures.
A Met Police Spokesperson said: “Police are assisting with road closures following reports of a fire at an address in Spring Gardens SW1.

Social media users posted videos of the inferno and asked what was going on.
One Tweeted: “There is some kind of fire in central London near Trafalgar Square.
“Lots of smoke seen for the last five minutes or so and lots of sirens heard too.”
