Liz Truss ‘would walk away from European Human Rights judges’ over Channel migrants

0

LIZ Truss told Tory MPs she was “prepared to leave” the European Convention on Human Rights over sending Channel migrants to Rwanda.

Last month the first deportation flight of small boat arrivals was blocked by the Strasbourg court — to the fury of Tory MPs who hate the meddling euro-judges.

The Foreign Secretary told the first formal hustings of the leadership race that “if necessary” then Britain could rescind its membership of the international convention as a last resort.

The behind closed door meeting of Tory MPs saw each of the eight candidates to be PM answer questions for ten minutes.

The Sun can reveal Ms Truss told MPs: “The ECHR has had mission creep. We have to deal with that.”

Insisting that she wants to reform first, she added: “but if it did take leaving the ECHR I would be prepared to do that.”

A Tory source said: “She made the point about three times, that without reform we could leave the ECHR before Rwanda policy would be ditched.”
