Sports Briefs: Marin rowers chasing gold at U19 Worlds with Team USA
Marin Rowing Association’s Samantha Smart and Quincy Stone are among the athletes who have been selected by USRowing to represent the United States at the 2022 World Rowing Under 19 Championships in Varese, Italy.
Mill Valley’s Smart will row in the women’s four boat, while Stone joins the women’s eight boat. They were among six members of the Marin Rowing Association to attend the USRowing Under 19 National Team Selection Camps, where Smart and Stone earned their roster spots. USRowing is sending 14 boats to the regatta.
The 2022 World Rowing Under 19 Championships is set to take place July 27-31.
Rugby
Redwood High School graduate Byron Finley has been added to the roster for the UC Berkeley rugby team.
As a defensive tackle and guard at Redwood, Finley served as the Giants’ co-captain. Finley played rugby for the Marin Highlanders club team, coached by John Vantress, which also produced Cal rugby team members Ryan Marshall, Griffin Rudy, Alex Aguero, and Jafer Snipes.
“It’s the best feeling in the world taking the next step in my athletic career,” Finley said. “I am really looking forward to being a member of the UC Berkeley community and all that it has to offer.”
Tennis
Dominican women’s tennis was awarded its sixth consecutive ITA All-Academic Team award while five players were named 2022 Division II Women ITA Scholar-Athletes.
The Penguins finished the year with a 3.503 team GPA to earn the programs’ ninth ITA All-Academic Team award during Dominican’s NCAA Division II era. In 2022, 110 women’s tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.
Haley Garcia and Antoinette Schreiber each earned their third ITA Scholar-Athlete award to lead the Penguins. Gigi Alajeely earned her first such honor as a Penguin after transferring from Concordia University Irvine as did freshmen Gina Dudley and Julia Rydel. In total, 715 Division II Women’s student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athletes in NCAA Division II.
