Museum announces it has discovered a hidden Vincent van Gogh self-portrait
The National Galleries of Scotland have announced quite the find. A previously unknown self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh, arguably the most famous painter in history, has been discovered on the back of another van Gogh painting, hidden behind cardboard and layers of glue.
The National Galleries, along with support from the Van Gogh Museum, made the announcement of the hidden self-portrait after X-rays revealed its existence on the flip side of van Gogh’s 1885 painting “Head of a Peasant Woman.” The National Galleries’ release says the X-ray image (seen above) shows "a bearded sitter in a brimmed hat with a neckerchief loosely tied at the throat. He fixes the viewer with an intense stare, the right side of his face in shadow and his left ear clearly visible"
