MP James Cleverly refused to back down in a row with Richard Madeley

“If you keep interrupting I can’t answer,” insisted Mr Cleverly.

He argued the Prime Minister can’t step in to solve the UK’s household bills because he’s leaving Number 10.

Tory candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are battling it out to become PM – but the result won’t be announced until September 5.

Richard insisted he wasn’t answering the question about what the government is doing NOW about the energy crisis.

The minister replied: “Liz has pledged to bring forward an emergency budget…”

Richard cut in saying: “Yes, in September. You keep sliding off the point!”

Hitting back, Cleverly said: “I’m not able to get to the point, Richard, because you keep interrupting me.”

“That’s not fair, no, that’s not fair.

“It is fair, we can rewatch the tape and see which of us has done the most talking on this programme.

It’s our job to hold you to an answer and if you’re not answering the question you will be interrupted.

I’m sorry if that’s too hard for you, but that’s how it works.

“Everything you’ve said in this interview, whether it’s a complete or interrupted sentence, you’ve made clear nothing is going to happen until the autumn.

“The central point of this interview is to put it to you that we need action now.

“I haven’t heard you say anything at all other than ‘oh well, we’ll get to that in autumn when we have a winner’.

“So we do have to interrupt, I’m sorry.

Cleverly replied: “Richard, the candidate can’t put their plans into practice until they become Prime Minister.”

The interview came to a frosty end before Richard thanked the minister for coming on the show.

It comes as energy bills are set to rise on August 26 – which money saving expert Martin Lewis claims will be “catastrophe”.
