Advocates celebrate end of Remain in Mexico policy, but warn GOP's cruelty is not yet over
Immigrant and legal advocates celebrated news this week that the inhumane Remain in Mexico policy is coming to an end. Following a Supreme Court decision this past June, which ruled that the Biden administration acted legally in ending the policy last year, a federal court lifted an injunction it had issued during that time. The administration then said this week it would no longer be enrolling asylum-seekers in the policy.
“Today is the culmination of years of hard-fought advocacy by people seeking asylum, border communities, and litigators,” Blaine Bookey, Legal Director of the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies (CGRS), said in a statement received by Daily Kos. The organization is among groups that sued over the anti-asylum program. “For over three years, the Remain in Mexico policy has exposed people seeking asylum to unspeakable violence.”
