About 700 passengers died in the 1947 Ramdas ship disaster. The incident shook India, but Independence was close at hand. Because of the arrival of Independence and the horrors of Partition, the sea disaster was soon forgotten. The tragedy was only revived by memories of a generation who referenced it to indicate their own age and location at the time o the incident.
