Steve Sarkisian named Quinn Ewers as Texas’ starting QB, and that’s a big deal for the Longhorns bettors

Big news out of Austin — the Longhorns officially have their QB1.

Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian let it be known that his Texas Longhorns will be starting the season with redshirt freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers as the man under center.

Ewers, the class of 2021’s top overall quarterback prospect in the nation, enters Austin after just one season at Ohio State where he sat behind the Buckeyes’ star QB C.J. Stroud.

A Texas native, Ewers has the chance to be the hometown kid who restores the credibility of the Longhorns’ football team. But he’ll have to fulfill the shoes of almost-Heisman-Trophy-winners like Vince Young and Colt McCoy, who quarterbacked the last Longhorn conference championship teams, and in Young’s case, the football team’s last national championship squad.

Both things happening are relatively farfetched, if you take a peak at the sportsbooks. Ewers’ Heisman odds at Tipico Sportsbook are +4000 and Texas is a longshot (+6000) to win the national championship.

But, hey, they play the game for a reason.

Months from now, will we be here talking about another mediocre and disappointing season? Or will the kid with a fashionable mullet be in New York saying “Hook ‘Em” at the Heisman Trophy Ceremony?

Let’s see what the 2022 college football season presents us.
