Bruno Fernandes says £40.5m Wolves' signing should have joined Man Utd
Bruno Fernandes has said that he wanted Wolverhampton Wanderers’ new signing Matheus Nunez to join him at Manchester United this summer.
Wolves recently made the headlines with the £40.5 million purchase of Nunes from Sporting Lisbon, and he has already made a good impression for the club.
The Portugal international was handed his debut against Tottenham Hotspur earlier today, and was inches away from bagging his maiden goal for the Midlands side.
Nunes finished the game with a 97 per cent pass accuracy while winning three tackles and six duels. The 23-year-old already looks a superb signing for Wolves.
Hence, there are no surprises that compatriot Fernandes has been praising him. In a recent Record interview, the 27-year-old said that Nunes should have come to United instead.
The Red Devils playmaker went on to say that the Premier League is made for him, and believes Nunes will probably explode in the league and show his qualities.
He said: “I’ve already talked to him, and told him that he should have come to Manchester United and not gone to Wolves. I’m sure he’ll probably explode in the league and show his qualities – the Premier League is made for him.”
United never looked at signing Nunes this summer
United had been linked with Nunes earlier this summer, but negotiations were never held with Sporting.
There were also suggestions that Manchester City or Liverpool could prise him away from Lisbon, and Wolves have done an incredible job to secure his signature.
He looked up for the challenge in the slender 1-0 loss to Spurs, and it remains to be seen whether he can carry on performing at the same intensity over the whole campaign.
If he manages to do so, many elite European clubs could be interested in him. United could also make a future move, but Wolves would surely command a significant fee.
United spent most of this summer trying to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona when they could have looked elsewhere. Nunes would have been a handy acquisition.
Nevertheless, they have made a big statement by landing Casemiro from Real Madrid. The Brazilian star is widely regarded as one of the world’s best holding midfielders.
The club are planning to spend big in the final 12 days of the transfer window, and they appear positive about landing Ajax winger Antony despite the £84m price tag.
