Former goalkeeper Paddy Kenny would not be shocked to see Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg accept a proposal from Real Madrid should it arrive this summer.
Los Blancos have lost Casemiro to Manchester United for a transfer fee that could rise to £70 million (GOAL).
Hojbjerg has reportedly become a potential replacement for the South American, with Carlo Ancelotti being a keen admirer of his qualities, having targeted him during his time at Everton (The Telegraph).
Alasdair Gold of Football.London recently claimed that Tottenham’s willingness to sell would entirely depend on the price, before pointing out that Hojbjerg is an important part of Conte’s squad.
Football Insider then reported last Saturday that Antonio Conte’s side is optimistic about keeping hold of the midfielder beyond this window.
Kenny feels that Hojbjerg would find it difficult to reject an offer from the Madrid club as he would be intrigued by the opportunity of playing for the Champions League winners.
However, the ex-shot stopper did admit that he could not see a sale taking place as the North London outfit would not want to lose his services at the last minute.
Speaking to Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, Kenny said: “Tottenham have had an unbelievable start, I’m sure they will be pleased with how it has gone. When Real Madrid come calling, it is tough to say no.
“The club probably don’t need or want to sell but from a player’s point of view, to turn Real Madrid down, it’s hard. It depends on how settled he is in London and how happy he is at Tottenham. Real Madrid is a massive, massive club, one of the biggest in the world.
“If they come in for him, it will be tough for him to turn that down but I don’t think Spurs would sell him in the first place.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
There is no doubt that clubs like Real Madrid would attract any player in world football due to the stature they have built over a long period of time. However, they have a host of midfielders like Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos in their ranks.
Hence, it is quite difficult to see Hojbjerg accept their offer if they attempt to sign him in the coming days. After all, moving to Santiago Bernabeu would risk his World Cup chances for Denmark due to heavy competition.
Furthermore, the 27-year-old would also be throwing away the opportunity to be a key part of an exciting project that Conte is currently building at Spurs.
