August 2022 newsletter
Lots of news, reminders, updates and more to share with you this month!
55+ BC Games Sep 13-17 – volunteers needed!
The 2022 55+ BC Games are just over a month away, September 13-17, and we’re excited to be a part of this big event, running the archery portion of the games! The venue has been moved from Topaz Park to the fields at West Shore Parks and Recreation Centre (Juan De Fuca rec centre), a much more accessible location for everyone involved!
On that note, we still need people to help out before, during and after the games with set up (delivering and setting up butts, tents, etc); helping out with things like directions, looking for lost arrows, picking up missed arrows etc. during competition; and then tear down after the games wrap. If people could contact Al WIlls and/or Greg Birtwistle, we’ll make up a list of ‘movers’ for the 12th & 17th or so and coordinate who is able to help out during the games. We’d greatly appreciate your assistance helping to run this event!
If you want to work the event as an ‘official’ volunteer (you get a T shirt and some SWAG), you can register here. If you can donate any time at all, please contact Greg or Al.
Annual General Meeting – Sep 22nd
Mark your calendars – our AGM will be held September 22nd at 7pm in the Kinsmen Fieldhouse at Westshore Parks and Recreation Centre (aka Juan De Fuca Rec Centre), 1767 Island Highway, Colwood. The meeting venue is located by the lower fields, above the golf course pro shop – marked #5 on this map. The change of venue this year is due to Saanich Commonwealth closing temporarily for maintenance (see the story below).
We welcome and encourage all our members to attend the AGM, as we will elect a Board to govern the club for the next year, which will include the 2023 Canadian Championships. We would appreciate hearing from present members who would like to volunteer to serve. If you are willing and/or would like more information, please contact the President.
Also, our next club Board of Directors meeting is August 18th at 7pm in the Arbutus Room at Saanich Commonwealth Place. Members are welcome to attend.
Reminder: indoor shooting pausing starting Aug 28
After August 28 (our Sunday shoot) indoor shooting will be paused for approx. 6 weeks as Commonwealth Centre will be closing for maintenance & upgrades Sep 5 – Oct 10, so no archery until at least October 13th. All these dates are in our calendar, which will be updated as soon as we confirm our dates in mid-September, probably every Sun/Thurs from Oct 13.
More tournament news and reminders
We are now officially the “club in waiting” to host the Canadian Outdoor Target Championships in August 2023. This is a big event, and we’ll need lots of help. Please consider making yourself available to help out. For more information contact Al or Greg.
And a reminder that the BC Outdoor Championships will be taking place in Oliver on Labour Day weekend, September 3-4. You can find info and registration details here.
Interested in a tuning clinic? Let us know!
We’re trying to gauge interest in the club organizing a shooting/tuning clinic. Anyone – from beginner to experienced archer – would be welcome to attend. Learn how and why to tune your bow, refresh your knowledge, or maybe just get the chance to perform a long-overdue tuning with the right tools and facility. Please take our short survey to let us know if this is something you’d be interested in so we can get an idea of numbers, logistics etc., and if we should go ahead with this. Our JOP kids continue to shine!
Our Junior Olympic Program archers have been a very active, enthusiastic and growing part of our club over the past year, and they continue to make great strides in the sport. Just recently, Helena had 12 certificates to hand out. Bailey Drinkwalter and Maddox Eliason got their Olympian pins!
Help needed for work party Aug 24
On August 24 at 10am – 3989 Metchosin Road – we will be organizing the contents of the club’s 2 containers to get things ready for the 55+ Games and next year’s nationals. If you’re able to show up and help out we would greatly appreciate it. The more people we have the quicker we’ll be finished!
Old equipment up for grabs
The club has 2 old butts with no centres, as pictured, that could be used up close or cut to make a square butt. If you’re interested, contact Al and make an offer!
