Russian news agencies announced, citing medical sources, that Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, the final president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), who brought an end to the Cold War and was a Nobel laureate in peace, had passed away at the age of 91.

When Gorbachev came to power in 1985, he opened up the Soviet Union to the outside world and implemented a number of domestic reforms.

He was unable to stop the Soviet Union’s gradual disintegration, which gave rise to modern Russia, the Russian Federation.

The Central Clinical Hospital of Russia was cited by foreign media reported that Mikhail Gorbachev died yesterday after a protracted illness.

Foreign leaders were quick to express their condolences. Gorbachev, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, paved the path for a free Europe, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, stated Gorbachev’s “tireless commitment to opening up Soviet society remains an example to us all.”

US President Joe Biden praised the former Soviet leader as a “man of remarkable vision,” adding he had the “courage” to “admit that things needed to change” after years of conflict.

Following the death of the former Soviet leader, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that Gorbachev “changed the course of history.”

According to the Tass news agency, Gorbachev, who died on August 30, will be laid next to his wife Raisa, who died of leukemia in 1999, in Moscow’s Novodevichy cemetery.
