Piers Morgan leads celebrity tributes to the Queen calling her ‘the greatest monarch in history’

PIERS Morgan has paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II – calling her the “greatest monarch in history”.

The TalkTV star took to Twitter as one of the first celebrities to react after Buckingham Palace confirmed Her Majesty Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, had passed away.

Buckingham Palace announced in a statement tonight: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Charles, 73 – who revealed his “great sadness” at the loss of his mother –  is now King of England, with his wife Camilla as Queen Consort.

Following the heartbreaking news, celebrities flooded social media to mourn The Queen, with Piers, 57, leading the way.

Will the Queen's funeral be aired on TV and will it be live?

The TV presenter wrote it was a “sad, sad day” as he mourned the loss of Her Majesty on Twitter, celebrating her as “humble and wise.”

“Breaking news: RIP Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 96,” he wrote. “The greatest Monarch in history, and the greatest of Britons.

“Dignified, humble, wise, stoic, and dedicated to duty and service to the country she loved. Thank you for everything, Ma’am.”

Piers concluded: “We will be forever indebted to you.”

The TV star then reacted to the sad news live on air during his TalkTV segment – as he said a “little piece” of himself died with Her Majesty.

“While this is one of the saddest and most momentous turning points in the history of the United Kingdom,” he told listeners.

“There’s nobody in this country or the world that hasn’t lived the majority of their lives under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

“I struggle to even imagine a Britain without the Queen – but the moment we have all been dreading has already come.”

Piers added: “Her Majesty the Queen died this afternoon in Balmoral, a little piece of us all died with her.”

It was announced earlier today that the Queen had tragically died – marking an end to her historic reign and sparking an outpouring of grief around the world.

The new King, Charles III, said: “The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.”

Prime Minister Liz Truss, who had was formally appointed by the Queen just two days ago, said the Queen’s death was a “huge shock to the nation and the world”.

She also referred to Charles as King Charles III, adding: “God save the King”.

The UK was immediately plunged into a state of mourning, with plans for her funeral and a national day of remembrance to be announced in the coming days.
