India, regarded by colonial Britain as the jewel in the crown, became Independent a few years before Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne. However, the next few decades saw one erstwhile British colony after another becoming independent. Uhuru in Kenya was followed by freedom elsewhere all over the world from Africa to the Caribbean and the Pacific.
