Carlos Alcaraz is officially No. 1!

The Spaniard tennis player defeated 23-year-old Norwegian Casper Ruud during the final Men’s Singles match at the US Open at Arthur Ashe stadium in Queens, New York on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

The teenager prevailed in four sets, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. He is now the youngest man at 19 years and two months to rank number one in the world after playing in and winning his first Grand Slam tournament. Lleyton Hewitt previously held the title for the youngest world No. 1 at 20 years, 8 months.

Carlos and Casper faced off twice prior to the US Open, once at 2021 Marbella and again at 2022 Miami. Carlos won both matches also in straight sets, respectively 6-2, 6-4 and 7-5, 6-4.

Prior to the finals match, Carlos played three five-set matches back-to-back, beating Croatia’s Marian Čilić, Italy’s Jannik Sinner and USA’s Frances Tiafoe. He previously was ranked world No. 4 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Carlos has also won five ATP Tour singles titles, including two Masters 1000 titles.
