Sources say she will not directly accompany the new monarch and wife Camilla.

But Ms Truss’s spokesman confirmed she would join the King as he led national mourning.

He added: “It’s not a requirement but the Prime Minister believes it’s important to be present for what is a significant moment around the UK.”

Buckingham Palace and No10 agreed to Ms Truss being at the events despite her having no formal role.

Her visits will not be seen as a tour, insiders insist.

Ms Truss will join royals in Edinburgh for a service at St Giles’ Cathedral, where Her Majesty’s coffin will lie for 24 hours for the public to pay their respects.

During his time north of the border, Charles will also meet First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The royal couple will fly to Belfast on Tuesday for a service at St Anne’s Cathedral, which Ms Truss will attend.

And at the end of the week they will be at a memorial in Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff.
