[Football] Football Falls to the Warriors
Doane Football hosted Midland on Saturday in Crete and the Warriors were able to pick up a 20-6 win over the host Tigers. Doane drops to 1-1 on the season while Midland improves to 3-0.
The Tigers struggled to get the offense on track as they were held to 185 yards of total offense. Midland finished with 288 yards of total offense as both teams committed four turnovers in the game.
Doane scored on their first possession following an eight-yard Warrior punt that set the Tigers up in Warrior territory. The Tigers were limited to one yard on the drive. Kelen Meyer (FR/Ord, Neb.) knocked in a 54-yard field goal to break the 40-year old record of 53 yards held by Ken Erickson (1982) and Ed Fye (1980).
Midland would tie the game with 1:18 left in the first quarter on a 21-yard field goal from Jared Quinonez. In the second quarter, Quinonez gave the Warriors the lead with a 43-yard field goal. A Tiger turnover would set the Warriors up for a 38-yard drive, ending in a one-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown. Midland led 13-3 at the half.
Doane was the first to score in the third quarter as Meyer made a 30-yard field goal with 6:49 to play. Midland put the final points on the board with 1:08 to play in the quarter on a three-yard quarterback draw by River Walker.
Midland rushed for 249 yards, led by Levi Markey with 114 yards. Trevor Jones added 79 yards with Walker finishing with 45 yards and two scores. Walker threw for 29 yards through the air on 3-of-10 passing.
Doane was led on the ground by Frazzie Wynn (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) with 60 yards on 10 carries. Michael Pulliam (JR/Wilber, Neb.) threw for 91 yards on 14 completions. Brehan Lambert (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) posted five receptions for 51 yards.
Defensively for the Tigers, Caden Doolittle (SR/Ponder, Texas) was in on 13 tackles. Donte Wiggins III (SR/Colorago Springs, Colo.) finished with 10 tackles, a fumble recovery, and one interception. Ty Martinsen (JR/Cedar Rapids, Neb.) and Ryan Michael (SR/Brea, Calif.) were in on eight tackles apiece. Cedric Gooch Jr. (SR/Wylie, Texas) had seven tackles and an interception. Anthony Adams (SO/San Antonio, Texas) added seven tackles as well. Michael and Owen Kuntz (JR/Crete, Neb.) were each in on two tackles for loss.
Doane will enter their bye week with nationally-ranked Dordt next in Sioux Center, Iowa.
