Sports briefs: San Marin, San Rafael standouts announce D-I commitments
San Marin High baseball player Anthony Scheppler and San Rafael High volleyball player Mary Healy both took to Twitter over the weekend to announce their college plans.
Scheppler, a junior who had a .405 batting average for the Mustangs last year, announced he will play baseball for UC Santa Barbara. Healy, a senior who has helped the Bulldogs to a 10-1 record in non-league action this season, announced she will play for North Carolina State.
UCSB is coming off a season where it posted a 44-14 record, including a 27-3 mark in conference play. The Gauchos made it to the NCAA Tournament, going 1-2 and getting eliminated by Stanford.
The NC State volleyball program is off to a 6-3 start this season.
Prep football
Tomales dropped to 0-2 on the season following a 46-8 loss against Calistoga on Saturday night. The Braves scored their lone touchdown in the first quarter but trailed 24-8 heading into the second.
Calistoga, expected to be one of the contenders for the North Coast Section eight-man title, added eight points in the second quarter then 14 more in the third to cap the scoring. Calistoga (2-0) is scheduled to face Branson in Ross on Oct. 29 in what should be a crucial game for both teams.
Field hockey
Redwood shut down the visitors from Chico to post a 2-0 victory Saturday. Maia Lewis and Amanda Mueller scored for the Giants, with assists coming from Sammy Haan and Eliza Byck. The Giants are scheduled to host Davis on Monday.
