The Carolean era began after King Charles ascended to the throne, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II on September, 8, 2022.
The word ‘Carolean’ comes from the name Charles.
The names used to categorise the eras of different monarchs usually stem from their names.
Before Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952, her father, King George IV reign was called ‘the Georgian era’.
Then, before that, King Edward VIII reign was known as ‘the Edwardian era’.
The Carolean era is no different for King Charles.

The word Carolean was first used during the reign of King Charles II in the 1600s.
The first King Charles reigned between 1625 to 1649 and his reign was known as ‘the Caroline era’.
The name Caroline came from the word ‘Carolus’ which is Latin for Charles.
It is because of the passing down of his name that we refer to King Charles III reign as the Carolean era.
