Man Utd star's World Cup hopes could be over after fresh injury - Our view

0

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has had a difficult start to the current campaign and it appears his World Cup hopes could already be over.

The England international ended last season on a disappointing note as he missed several weeks of action in order to remove bolts from his leg surgery back in 2015.

It was anticipated that 27-year-old would redeem himself this term, but that has hardly been the case with the fierce competition from new signing Tyrell Malacia.

Shaw played 90 minutes in the season opener as well as 45 minutes at Brentford, but he has since been either on the bench or left out of the matchday squad.

According to Manchester Evening News, Shaw missed the games against Leicester City and Real Sociedad with a foot injury. This should be a cause for concern.

Shaw’s World Cup hopes could be over amid fresh injury

Shaw has had the worst possible start to the campaign for the Red Devils. He lost his place to Malacia after just two games, and now finds himself nursing an injury.

It is quite clear that he won’t make the squad for the upcoming Nations League games and this probably ends his chances of making the World Cup team in Qatar.

United do have a hectic schedule next month with nine matches before another four in early November, but Malacia is likely to remain the regular starter in the league.

Hence, Shaw could be left with Europa League and League Cup games to prove himself. It seems unlikely that Gareth Southgate will pick players without league minutes.

There could be a particular exception with Harry Maguire, but we don’t see anyone else making the cut for the World Cup without having to prove themselves in the league.

Shaw needs a dramatic change in fortunes over the coming weeks. As of now, Kieran Trippier, Reece James, Tyrick Mitchell and probably Ben Chilwell are left-back options for Southgate.
