My son lost his temper and ended up in prison – I’m worried about him
DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER he breached his restraining order, my son is on suicide watch in prison.
He apparently pushed his ex-partner and put his hands around her throat during a row over their son.
They are both 30 and I’m 55. My grandson is three.
My son said his ex asked him for money for shoes for their boy but he couldn’t afford it.
She slapped him, he saw red, flipped, and then the police were called.
They put a restraining order on him, which he’s now broken.

He’s had mental health problems and recently lost his job.
I’m so concerned. How can I help him?

DEIDRE SAYS: This is worrying for you, but also damaging for your grandson to have warring parents.
As your son is in prison, he may be able to talk to a Samaritan or one of their trained prisoner “listeners” (samaritans.org, 116 123).
MORE FROM DEAR DEIDRE
Encourage him to see a mental health practitioner in prison if he can. When he comes out, he should see his own GP.
My support pack Managing Anger will show him where to find help to change, so his son never witnesses violence again from him.
