Following the approval by the Pakistani Prime Minister of the Foreign Ministry’s recommendation to declare a day of mourning and fly the Pakistani flag at half-mast in honor of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II of the UK, Pakistan marks a state mourning day, according to Pakistani media.

“On behalf of the people & government of Pakistan, I wish to convey our sincere good wishes to His Majesty King Charles III on his accession to the throne, “Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on his Twitter handle.

According to Pakistan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting Maryam Aurangzeb, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared September 12 to be a national day of mourning in honor of the late British monarch.

Up until 1956, when the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was established in accordance with the nation’s new constitution, Pakistan was regarded as one of the Dominions of the British Commonwealth after Queen Elizabeth II rose to the throne in 1952.

Australia and New Zealand also reportedly declared public holidays on September 22 and 26 in remembrance of the late queen.

Earlier on September 8, Queen Elizabeth II, who had ruled the UK for 70 years, passed away in Balmoral castle in Scotland at the age of 96.
