Michigan Proposal 3 Would Overturn Every Pro-Life Law, Allow Abortions Up to Birth

Michigan pro-life advocates have a nickname for Proposal 3 on the state ballot: The Anything Goes Abortion Amendment.

The pro-abortion measure, which would amend the Michigan Constitution, will be on the November ballot for voters’ consideration.

If it passes, Michigan would allow the killing of unborn babies in abortions through all nine months of pregnancy and allow anyone, including people without any medical training, to “assist” with an abortion, according to Citizens to Support Michigan Women and Children.

“I think the biggest concerns with Proposal 3 are that it’s too confusing, too extreme, and too permanent,” Christen Pollo, spokeswoman for the pro-life coalition, told Local 4.

A legal analysis by John Bursch, a former Michigan solicitor general and senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defending Freedom, identified 47 state laws that could be erased if the amendment passes, according to the report.

These include laws about late-term abortions, infanticide, parental consent, the age of consent to have sex, abortion facility inspections and other safety measures.

Currently, Michigan law requires parents to consent for their underage child to have basically any medical procedure, from having their tonsils removed to an abortion. However, the amendment would create an exception for abortion, making it so a girl as young as 12 can have an abortion without her parents’ knowledge or consent.

Pollo said the amendment would put women’s and girls’ lives at risk as well as unborn babies, because it could end important safety measures like abortion facility inspections.

“[The] Anything Goes Abortion Amendment is dangerous for women. It repeals important safety measures and regulations that protect women,” she said, urging anyone who cares about women’s health to oppose it.

Another part of the amendment would prohibit state officials from prosecuting anyone who “assists” with an abortion, whether it’s a school counselor helping a 13-year-old get an abortion without her parents’ knowledge or an untrained abortion worker performing an abortion, according to the coalition.

Earlier this summer, Citizens to Support Michigan Women and Children challenged the measure after finding numerous errors on a petition circulated by the pro-abortion group Reproductive Freedom for All to place it on the ballot.

On Thursday, however, despite dozens of typographical errors, the state Supreme Court ruled that the Board of State Canvassers must allow the proposed constitutional amendment to be placed on the ballot.

“Some people would say, ‘Oh, they’re just spaces,’ but amending the constitution is pretty serious business and the correct number of typos to put in your constitution is zero,” Pollo told the Associated Press prior to the ruling.

Local 4 reports a recent poll showed 60 percent of voters support the amendment. However, pro-life advocates are working hard to educate the public about how extreme the proposal really is.

Michigan is a major abortion battleground state. Pro-life Republicans control the state legislature, but pro-abortion Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer repeatedly has vetoed life-saving legislation. In July, Whitmer vetoed $21.4 million in funding to support pregnant and parenting mothers who choose life for their babies.

Michigan has a pre-Roe v. Wade law that protects unborn babies by banning abortions, but a judge recently blocked the law at the request of pro-abortion groups. The amendment could invalidate the law completely if it passes.

Nearly 30,000 unborn babies are aborted in Michigan every year.
