[Women's Soccer] Hawks Dominate Multnomah in 5-0 Victory
PORTLAND, Ore. – In game three of San Diego Christian College's four-game series in Oregon, the Hawks soundly defeated the host Multnomah University Lions by a score of 5-0. The victory was the team's second in a row and moved SDCC to 3-1-1 overall (0-0 GSAC).
Scoring came from a veteran and several new sources for the Hawks. In the 15th minute, freshman Layla Flores got San Diego Christian on the board. The goal was also the young defender's first collegiate goal of her career.
Multnomah would continue to turn away opportunities for the Hawks in the first half while also creating a few chances of their own. Although the Hawks outshot the Lions 13 to 3 before the break, they only broke through on one opportunity.
Coach Gerardo Hidalgo made some strategic changes to begin the half that opened up the game for SDCC in the second. Eleven seconds in, the Hawks had doubled the score. Junior striker, Ashlyn Edwards did what she does best, ripping down the middle of the Multnomah defense for an unassisted goal.
In the second half, the Hawk defense completely shut down the Lion offense limiting them to only 1 shot on goal while producing 17 of their own. San Diego Christian freshman forward, Brianna Figueroa, would capitalize on one such opportunity to make it a 3-0 lead for the Hawks in the 59th minute.
Freshman, Ashley Galvan would continue the scoring for the Hawks, tallying a brace, for her first multiple-goal collegiate game. The midfielder would score the team's final of two goals with an impressive back-heel off an Alaina Afogoha pass.
Coach Hidalgo noted, "Multnomah made the game difficult for us in the first half so we made some adjustments which turned out to pay dividends for us." He continued, "I'm very proud of everyone as they are all fully engaged during the game. This was vital to our success today. I am very pleased with today's performance. It is great to have had multiple girls score today while also earning our first shutout."
