PL defender labels former Tottenham man as ‘Messi’ after recent performance
Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa has labelled ex-Tottenham man Marcus Edwards as ‘Messi’ after footage emerged of his performances for Sporting Lisbon.
Edwards came through the Spurs academy and was handed his first-team debut by Mauricio Pochettino.
In fact, Konsa is not the first one to liken the winger to Lionel Messi, with Pochettino also drawing comparisons between the Paris Saint-Germain star and the former Tottenham starlet back in 2016 (Sky Sports).
Edwards left the North London club to join Vitoria Guimaraes in the summer of 2019 and his reputation has been burgeoning for the last three years.
His performances for Vitoria earned the Spurs academy graduate a move to Sporting during the January transfer window.
The 23-year-old has been impressive since his move to the José Alvalade Stadium and will have a chance to prove a point to his former employers when Tottenham travel to Portugal for a Champions League tie on Tuesday.
It was Edwards who was the star of the show for Sporting in their Champions League season opener against Eintracht Frankfurt last week, with the former Spurs man getting a goal and an assist to help the Portuguese giants come away with a 3-0 win from Germany.
Edwards posted a video of his individual highlights against Frankfurt on Instagram, with Konsa responding with a comment that simply read: “Messi”.

Edwards will certainly be a handful for our backline, given his ability to carry the ball and go past players. I expect Conte to start Ryan Sessegnon at left wing-back over Ivan Perisic to add a little more defensive solidity as the former Fulham man would be able to cope better with Edwards’ pace.
