MAINTAINING healthy looks consists of a lot of steps, but the most important step is washing it.
But experts have revealed just how often you really should be washing it and how to go longer between washes.
Depending on your hair type, washing your hair too often can actually do more harm than good, reports the Express.
Hair expert, Simone Thomas at Simone Thomas Wellness said washing your hair too often can cause it to become dry and brittle as you are stripping its natural oils.
So how often should you be washing your hair?
According to A-list celebrity hairdresser Jon Hala, you should only wash your hair when absolutely necessary, and your hair has a way of telling you when it’s time.

You can check whether it needs a wash with two simple steps.
First, run your fingers through it, if it is still soft and bouncy it won’t need one.
Jon Hala added: “Although the general recommendation is to wash it a maximum of one to two times a week, I’d say that it should only be washed when the hair is visibly oily.
“If the scalp is itchy or there are signs of flakiness due to dirt, then it’s clear it’s time for a wash.

“Remember, for a healthy scalp you need natural sebum for healthy follicles and washing your hair too regularly will reduce this.”
If you find yourself washing your hair every day or every other day because it gets greasy quickly, then there are some measures that can be taken.
Cally Borg, hair expert and personal stylist for Amanda Holden revealed to the Express that apple cider vinegar can work wonders.
You can make an at-home treatment by diluting one part apple cider vinegar with three parts water and rinsing your hair with it once a week.

Apple cider vinegar can balance and detoxify the hair and remove any excess grease.
Jon Hala recommends working shampoo through your hair for a few minutes and rinsing with cold water to cut through grease to prevent having to wash it as often.
